Nusa Penida is the main island to the South-East of Bali. What most people call "Nusa Penida" is actually 3 separate islands: Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. Dive Sites are all around these three islands with the main ones being Manta Point, Crystal Bay and Blue Corner. Penida is where people come to see the Sunfish (or Mola Mola) during their season (August to Octobre). People also come here to see the Manta Rays at Manta Point which is a cleaning station on the south side of Nusa Penida.

Because of its location, Penida is subject to a number of currents all arriving off it's shores. This creates some quite challenging dive sites though it's also true to say that any of the dive sites can be dived by anyone if the conditions are right. Generally though you'll experience quite strong currents when diving around Penida (especially to the north west of the island where most of the drift dive sites are. If you dive here enough then you'll eventually have a "Penida Experience" which generally involves really strong down and/or up currents. These dives will more often than not scare the life out of you and while they can be potentially traumatic - they're actually really good learning experiences!

Personally I've had 2 such experiences so far and while it's not stopped me from diving here, it has made me a lot more aware of local conditions and how to manage divers on such dives. They are dives 80 and 350. So that's the reason why we only take Advanced divers with experience diving in currents to Penida!
